They also put serial numbers on every commercial pistol they sold. You have acknowledged that Colt put a serial number on every military issue pistol they made.

The bigger problem is that if you should be discovered in possession of an M1911 with no serial number, it may fall on you to prove that it never had a serial number. Is there a statute of limitations that protects you? I don't know. If you argue that your pistol never had a serial number, you are effectively arguing that you know you are in possession of stolen property. They didn't have serial numbers because they were stolen. There are IMHO (disclaimer: I am not a lawyer) a couple of problems.įirst, "lunchbox" guns were NOT legal. Now, since my pistol was obviously made before 1968, and it does not appear to be have been altered, what's the problem with having this pistol? Since this is your first post, you clearly have not discussed this here before. However, we further know there were the "lunch box" pistols with no numbers, and which were legal.

The comment about the quality of the early efforts from Essex was will taken. After the war they continued to make the frames and slides. They got their start in the 1911 business during WWII, building replacement frames and slides for Gov't arsenal rebuilds for returned or battle damaged 1911's. We also know that Colt did stamp the issued pistols. Just alittle more information on Essex Arms. Now, as many already know, there was no serial number requirement prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
